Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas a Nice

The Cathedral signifies the long established Russian presence on the Riviera at the end of the 19th century, and you will find a continued Russian community in Nice today.

Crowned by six onion domes, the multicoloured Cathédrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas (Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St-Nicolas) was built between 1902 and 1912 in early-17th-century style. This church was designed to resemble St-Basile in Moscow. Inside, the frescoes, icons and panelling smack of Imperial Russia. Dress codes apply.

Ordered and built by none other than Tsar Nicholas II, this is the most beautiful religious edifice of the Orthodoxy outside Russia, and a perfect expression of Russian religious art abroad. It dates from the belle époque, when some of the Romanovs and their entourage turned the Riviera into a stomping ground (everyone from grand dukes to ballerinas walked the promenade). The cathedral is richly ornamented and decorated with icons. You'll spot the building from afar because of its collection of ornate onion-shaped domes. During church services on Sunday morning, the building closes to tourist visits.
