Tegel International Airport – Berlin, Germany Berlin International Airport in Tegel "Otto Lilienthal" (IATA: TXL, ICAO: EDDT) (often shortened to Tegel) is an airport in Berlin, Germany. It lies in Tegel, a section of the northern borough of Reinickendorf. Tegel is referred to as the "Frequent Flyer Airport" and has the most scheduled flights of the three airports serving Berlin. In 2006, it served 11.8 million passengers. The airport is scheduled to close in 2011, six months after the formation of a new terminal expansion and the renaming of the Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport to the Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, which is slated to handle all Berlin flights thenceforth.

Main buildingDuring the Berlin Airlift in 1948, the longest runway in Europe (2,400 m) was built at Tegel. Modern facilities were built in the 1970s, and Tegel began to replace Tempelhof International Airport as the main airport of West Berlin. Tempelhof, surrounded by urban development, was too noisy and its runways were too short for modern jumbo jets.
